University Information Services

We have deprecated the MCS Linux service because of technical and resource constraints.

At its peak, MCS Linux accounted for only 2% of MCS logins, and use of this service has declined steadily in recent years. Unfortunately, we have had to remove the Linux part of the service because of unforeseen technical challenges in offering a dual boot environment on the new University Managed Desktop (UMD) service for Windows.

The new UMD-based Mac service remains unchanged, and the MCS Windows service will remain until we replace it with a new UMD-based service later this year. See our report on the Review of managed desktop provision for further information.

We’re happy to work with any departments with MCS sites who have a need for a remote Linux service and can investigate hosting an SSH service if there is a teaching or student research need. Please contact us at manageddesktopreview@uis.cam.ac.uk.
