University Information Services

University Information Services (UIS) provides a range of facilities and services for staff and students of the University and colleges. This page describes accessibility software and solutions available and other services that may be of help to those with disabilities who might require assistance using computing facilities.

Accessibility and Managed Cluster rooms

The Managed Cluster Service (MCS) is available to students and staff of the University. 

The Ely Training Rooms are on the ground floor of the Roger Needham Building at the West Cambridge Site. Accessible toilet facilities are available within the building.

The Phoenix Teaching Rooms are on the ground floor of the Phoenix Building on the New Museums Site. Accessible toilet facilities are available within the building, they are also available outside normal opening hours.

The Titan Teaching Rooms are on the second floor of the Cockcroft Building, on the New Museums Site, and can be accessed by lift. An accessible toilet is next to Titan Teaching Room 2, but this cannot be accessed from Titan Teaching Room 1. Users of Titan Teaching Room 1 need to exit the Cockcroft building via the lift and use the accessible toilet in the Phoenix Building. 

The University Centre Computer room (Ryle Room) is on the third floor of the University Centre, Mill Lane, and is accessible by lift. Accessible toilets are available on the first and ground floors.

The 17 Mill Lane Training Room is on the first floor of 17 Mill Lane, and can be accessed by a lift located at the rear of the building in the courtyard for 16a Mill Lane. Accessible toilet facilities are available near the Graduate Union area of the building and is available during office hours.

Within rooms

All rooms use benching and office chairs on wheels. In addition every room, except the 17 Mill Lane Training Room, has an accessible height adjustable bench. The angle and height of monitors is easily adjusted.  The size of text and zoom level can be set on the various platforms as follows: 

Windows: Start menu > All Programs > Utilities > Text Size Changer

Mac: Apple menu > System Preferences > Accessibility

Linux: Systems Setting from the Launcher > Universal Access > Seeing tab

Some alternative keyboards and pointer devices (ergonomic mice) are available for training courses by prior arrangement (contact or phone 34600), and arrangements may be made if users require installation of USB drivers for their specific keyboards or pointer devices. Headphones are also available from Information Services Reception for purchase (contact as above).

Physical access to UIS Reception and Service Desk

The main UIS Reception and Service Desk are on the ground floor of the Roger Needham Building on the West Cambridge Site.

Accessibility on other UIS systems


Hermes is a Unix system and is accessible through an ssh client to a line-mode interface. The recommended way of using Hermes for email is via a mail user agent (MUA) such as Outlook or Mail or via the webmail interface at, which has been designed to be accessible through a line-mode or speech-enabled web browser. These ways of accessing the systems mean that you can control accessibility settings on the machine from which you are logging in.

Users of University Administrative Service email systems (MS Outlook) will have access to accessibility options and should contact to the Office Services team for advice.

Web-based services

Whenever possible, web-based services provided by Information Services have been designed to be accessible through a line-mode or speech-based browser. If you have difficulties using a service, please make direct contact with the support address for that service, through the Service Desk or via . In difficulty, please telephone the Communications Group co-ordinator on 34598.
