Referencing software and copyright

Users should be aware that the features of some packages that assist in retrieving full text downloads of journal articles may inadvertently lead to breach of 'Fair Use' copyright restrictions. They may also cause unacceptably high load on the server housing a journal if used inconsiderately, and can lead to your IP address being blocked by the server (or, in the worst case scenario, can lead to part or all of the CUDN being blocked).

If you have legitimate reasons (such as preparing a systematic review article) for wanting to download the whole of a journal to your local device, it is advisable to contact the journal editor or publisher to seek permission first.

In other cases, you should seek to limit the load your software is placing on the remote server by avoiding attempting to download very large numbers of full text articles in a single batch. If you make a habit of downloading articles as you go along, rather than collecting a large number of references and batch downloading all of them, your research activity is unlikely to inconvenience anyone else.
