FAQ V22

EndNote on the MCS runs from a central server and not from the local hard drive. This means that certain files which are necessary for correct functionality are not in standard places and it is necessary to run a setup script to impose the correct location settings. This can only happen when EndNote is initially started by clicking on the program icon in the Start menu (once you have done this the settings will remain valid for the rest of your login session). If you attempt to start EndNote in any other way; either by clicking a library or by selecting "Go to EndNote" from Word's Tools menu; this setup script will not be called and EndNote will fail with a variety of error messages.

To use EndNote with MS Word, first run EndNote once. Then quit from EndNote and open your Word document. Click "Go to EndNote" to link the two programs and add references from your library to the document.

If you do not close EndNote before using the "Go to EndNote" command you may end up with a situation where two copies of EndNote are attempting to run simultaneously and they will crash.

EndNote on the MCS must always be initiated by using the Start menu when you first login. We recommend that you also use this method when working on a personal machine as it is less likely to lead to crashing and strange states.

The Computing Service runs a course on basic use of EndNote each term (see Endnote for Bibliographies courses). If you need further help, or if you can't attend the course and would like a copy of the course workbook, email .
