Frequently asked questions for webmasters using the Streaming Media Service (SMS)
Registered users get access to the Streaming Media Service wiki (https://wiki.csx.cam.ac.uk/sms/Main_Page), which is a source of more information.
How much does using the Streaming Media Service cost?
At present the Streaming Media Service does not charge for bandwidth or storage. It's a free service.
UIS reserves the right to charge one day, but there will be no back dated bills for using the service.
Who has access to media items on the SMS?
Access to media items on the Streaming Media Service may be either unrestricted or by Raven authentication. The owner of the files is able to choose, and can change the access if they wish.
You don't seem to offer the final file format that I want?
We believe we offer a small but useful set of transcoded files that should allow the majority of users to use your media. If you have suggestions for additional file formats, please make some suggestions via the wiki (https://wiki.csx.cam.ac.uk/sms/Suggestions)
Which combinations of web browsers and media players are likely to work?
Most combinations of recent browsers and media players are likely to work.
There is a long pause before media clip playback starts, why?
Some delay before playback commences is inevitable as the Streaming Media Service initializes streaming of the clip to your media player. However, if you experience long delays it could be that a firewall between you and the Streaming Media Service servers is causing problems, if you suspect that this is the case, please contact your local computing support team. If you are the local computing support team, email sms-support@uis.cam.ac.uk.
