Microsoft is replacing its original version of Stream, which it refers to as 'Stream (Classic)', with Microsoft Stream (on SharePoint), where videos are saved to SharePoint by default. You'll need to move any videos hosted on the Stream (Classic) service before 29 February 2024.

If you have more than 20 videos hosted on Stream (Classic), we can help you move them to OneDrive or SharePoint using a bulk migration tool from Microsoft. If you have fewer videos, please follow the manual migration instructions.

Prepare for migration

Microsoft is still updating its migration tool, so we recommend checking its support page and the migration column of the Stream service comparison spreadsheet for details on its limitations and features.

  • Delete any videos from Stream (Classic) if you don't want them to be migrated. Videos are saved within 'Containers' on Stream (Classic). Generally there is one container per User, Channel or Group. The migration tool does not allow for individual videos to be selected within the Container. Instead, it migrates all of the videos within a Container by default. The latest version does allow us to filter by 'Content Type', 'Publish Date' or 'Viewing Data' (see Microsoft's information on migration filters), which might be useful.

  • Update any embedded links or references to the videos with the new link after they have been migrated. The tool will create a redirect link for the old video URL in Stream (Classic), which should also work for embedded videos, but these will only be valid until 2025.

  • Make a note of the sharing permissions for the videos before the migration. The tool might not be able to copy all of the access permissions associated with the videos, so we recommend checking them after they've been migrated. Videos that are migrated to a Teams or SharePoint site will inherit the permissions of the site.

  • Download any transcripts that you have edited so you can re-upload them, if required. The tool should copy the videos' transcripts, but you might want to download any transcripts that you've spent a long time editing just in case you need to re-upload them. Find out more about how to upload edited transcripts.
