Friday 20 May: Transcoding of uploads to the Streaming Media Service (SMS) has resumed.
Current situation
Our initial focus was to attempt to accelerate preparations to launch Yuja, the replacement SMS platform. We have been working closely with YuJa to prepare the new platform for Cambridge, however, it is now apparent that further development work is needed by the vendor to adapt the platform for our needs. This work is estimated to complete late July. We are acutely aware that uploading and hosting new content needs to resume in the interim.
Continuity of service
The SMS will continue to serve all existing content until we can migrate to the new YuJa platform. To enable us to resume transcoding new content, additional storage space had to be found on the SMS servers. To achieve this UIS moved a sub-set the archive files held on the SMS system to another filestore. Moving these files freed up much-needed space without impacting service delivery.
No live media has been moved or deleted. We have only moved the internal archive copies of media items to a different filestore. These are not used for the live delivery of content. If you need any archive files, they can be retrieved. All your published media files will continue to be available on the SMS as usual.
Transcoding backlog should be cleared today
Now that sufficient space is available, media files held in the transcoding queue are being processed. You do not need to do anything. We are aiming to process the transcoding queue over the next few hours so that the backlog will be cleared today. The service should be operating as usual by the weekend.
Project updates
A new project status page outlines the roadmap for the SMS upgrade project.
