University Information Services

Group-owned Desktop Services filespaces allow groups to store and access shared data, and to publish group web pages.

There are various ways to access your group's filespace on the DS-Filestore service, depending on the device and operating system you are using, and whether or not it is connected to the University's data network (CUDN):

From an MCS computer

Note: always remember to end your session by quitting the web browser and logging out when you finish using an MCS computer. If you do not, the next user of that machine will have access to your group's filestore.

Windows 7

  1. Click on the Start menu.
  2. Click on My Computer and double-click Ux on home (X:).
  3. Click the groups directory and locate your society directory.
  4.

Linux

  1. Double-click the Computer icon.
  2. Click on Filesystem > ux > groups.
  3. Now locate your society directory.

Note: You could also use a Terminal window.

Mac OS

When you log in to the Managed Cluster Service you will automatically be connected to UX. An icon will appear on the desktop. Select the groups directory and locate your group's home directory.

From your own computer – connected to the CUDN

If your computer is connected to the University data network (but not via eduroam), you can use the Common Internet File System (CIFS) (also known as SMB/Samba) to connect to your group's filespace.

Note that DriveX@UX contains all group and society filespaces.

Once you have set up your CIFS connection, your group's shared filespace on DS-Filestore will appear as another network device – just like a CD drive, a local hard disk or an external USB stick.

See the detailed instructions for your operating system:

From your own computer – not connected to the CUDN

Use the DS-Files web interface at https://dsfiles.ds.cam.ac.uk.

Note: Depending on the capabilities and configuration of your web browser, this option may provide slightly less functionality.

From mobile devices

The free DS-Files mobile app is available for iOS and Android devices. Using a mobile device, go to https://dsfiles.ds.cam.ac.uk and you will automatically be redirected to download the appropriate version of the app.

Connecting to DS-Filestore using SFTP

You can also use standard file transfer utilities to connect via SFTP. Use any file transfer program that supports the SFTP protocol to connect to sftp.ds.cam.ac.uk. Log in using your standard Desktop Services username and password, then navigate to /ux/SOC to find the group and society filespaces.

Remote login to MCS Linux

This method allows you to manage your files and to change access rights remotely using Unix commands.

Note: This is the only method of checking your quota usage remotely.

You can login remotely to MCS Linux (linux.ds.cam.ac.uk) from any system using ssh or slogin.

To find your group's filespace, cd to /ux/groups/
