The Managed Cluster Service (MCS) closed on 1 August 2023. From this date MCS Windows, macOS and Linux computers were disabled. Many MCS sites migrated to the University Managed Desktop (UMD) service during the summer of 2023. Access to supporting services such as DS-FileStore and DS-Print were not affected by the MCS closure.

MCS Windows Known Problems

Printers missing or default printer not set

  • Issue - Intermittent failure at logon to setup printers correctly
  • Reported - July 2012
  • Reason - slow networking
  • Fix - None
  • Workaround - search and run the following command Start -> Connect to Nearest Printer

VMware Player

  • Issue - Unable to add VMware tools
  • Reported - March 2012
  • Reason - You do not have admin rights on the host machine
  • Fix - None
  • Workaround - Manually download tools from VMware and add them to your Virtual Machine - tools for Windows VM's can be found in Y:\VMware Tools.

Vet School CALS

  • Issue - certain CALS give the following error when opened: "Problem opening C:\\{userid}\AppData\Local\Temp".
  • Reported - 2 August 2004
  • Reason - Unknown.
  • Fix - None.
  • Workaround - Press "OK" to continue.

Word & Mendeley - ActiveX Error

  • Issue - When selecting "References" in Word you receive a "Runtime Error 429" message.
  • Reported - 11 August 2015.
  • Reason - ActiveX is trying to communicate with Mendeley, which is not running.
  • Fix - None.
  • Workaround - Mendeley must be started before starting Word.

Subtitle Workshop

  • Issue - preferences do not roam.
  • Reported - 11 November 2014.
  • Reason - preferences are saved in a folder of a users profile that does not roam.
  • Fix - None.
  • Workaround - None.

Google Chrome

  • Issue - cannot start embeded Flash videos.
  • Reported - December 2016.
  • Reason - Chrome cannot run and control Flash when it is installed on a re-directed network share.
  • Fix - None.
  • Workaround - close Chrome (if it is running) and then go to Start -> Google -> Google Chrome with Flash.

Movie Maker

  • Issue - not available in Windows 10.
  • Reported - January 2017.
  • Reason - Microsoft deprecated Windows Essentials.
  • Fix - None.
  • Workaround - Avidemux has been made available.

Autodesk All Products

  • Issue - Embeded help causes AutoCAD to freeze.
  • Reported - August 2017.
  • Reason - Embeded web browser does not work with AppV.
  • Fix - None.
  • Workaround - Use the online help by pressing F1

Autodesk Inventor

  • Issue - It is not possible to export a .IDW Inventor file to a .DWG AutoCAD file
  • Reported - August 2017.
  • Reason - DbxBridge.exe will not deploy via AppV and causes application to lock-up.
  • Fix - None.
  • Workaround - None.

Zotero Extensions

  • Issue - Zotero for Firefox extensions and Zotero Standalone have been replaced by a single standalone Zotero application for users of all web browsers.
  • Reported - August 2017
  • Reason - Mozilla is discontinuing the powerful extension framework on which Zotero for Firefox is based in favor of WebExtensions, a new framework based on the Chrome extension model.
  • Fix - You now install the web browser extension you require for use with Zotero within the required web browser application you wish to use it with. (https://www.zotero.org/download/) Select the required Zotero connector you wish to install.

Zotero Plugins

  • Issue - Zotero for Word is not launching correctly.
  • Reported - September 2017
  • Reason - Zotero 5.0 has been completely re-designed by the Developer.
  • Fix - Launch Zotero 5.0 which will automatically install the Zotero Word plugin, then launch Word 2016. Press the Enable button to allow Macros to run. You will see two tabs on the Ribbon - one called Add-Ins and Zotero. You will now be able to use Zotero in Word 2016 successfully.

QSR Nvivo

  • Issue - When launching a Nvivo file the application opens in Starter Mode.
  • Reported - August 2017.
  • Reason - This is because by launching from the file directly it fails to apply the appropriate licensing information for Nvivo.
  • Fix - None
  • Workaround - Launch the Nvivo application directly from the Start Menu and then open the file from within the application once it is launched.

Yellow Folder Icon in Taskbar

  • Issue - Yellow folder icon in taskbar fails to open Explorer
  • Reported - October 2017
  • Reason - Function becomes corrupt for currently logged on user.
  • Fix - None.
  • Workaround -
    • 1. Type Windows-Button and then search "File Explorer", when you type "F" Explorer will probably be the first hit.
    • 2. Left click the Windows Start Menu button and select the mandatory favorite "File Explorer".
    • 3. Left click the Windows Start Menu button and scroll down the Start Menu list to "F" where you will find "File Explorer".
    • 4. Right click the Windows Start Menu button and select "File Explorer".
