Compatible hardware

UIS recommend Dell desktop and laptop computers for use with the University Managed Desktop (UMD) service, but will support compatible devices from other manufacturers.

Microsoft state that all devices using Windows Autopilot (which is what is used by the UMD) should meet the minimum hardware requirements for Windows (https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-uk/000189676/windows-10-how-to-ena...). Windows UMD currently uses Windows 10.

Dell desktop and laptop computers purchased directly from Dell Premier will come with a 5-year on-site warranty. For the duration of this warranty, if you experience any issues with your computer, we'll help diagnose faults and contact the manufacturer on your behalf to arrange repairs.

Visit Dell's website to check the warranty of your Dell products. You will need to enter your Dell service tag, which can be found on your device.

Procuring hardware

You can:

  • Use your existing hardware if it is compatible (see above)
  • Order new hardware directly from Dell Premier (please fill in the University Managed Desktop set up - Windows form for access to Dell Premier)
  • Please ensure any new devices are compatible with Windows 11 as the current plan is for UMD to start using Windows 11 in 2024/25. If you would like your institution to trial Window 11 UMD devices please contact the Service Desk

Apple

All Apple devices must be assigned to the University of Cambridge and Related Institutions Automated Device Enrolment pool to be compatible with the UMD service. To confirm whether your devices are included, please contact Apple Support  via the UIS Service Desk with the serial numbers of the devices.

Compatible hardware

macOS

  • Any Apple macOS device compatible with the latest macOS version
  • Apple peripherals such as Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse
  • Other peripherals and monitors are subject to evaluation
  • Apple Silicon iMacs must be specified with Ethernet

iOS and iPadOS

Procuring hardware

You can purchase Apple hardware from several companies that were awarded the Higher Educational Contract. Devices purchased through the Apple Framework Agreement will be added to the Automated Device Enrolment pool automatically.

Warranty

All devices purchased through the Apple Framework Agreement will have at least a 3-year warranty. In the first year, you should direct any warranty claims to Apple. Warranty repairs in subsequent years should be directed to the reseller you purchased the device from.

UIS will only support computers purchased directly by institutions for software-related faults. If a fault is deemed to be hardware-related, the institution will be responsible for liaising with the supplier to arrange repair or replacement.
