What are passkeys?

Passkeys replace your password. You can sign into your University IT account using your face, fingerprint, or PIN. It’s simple, fast, and helps protect you against phishing attacks. Use passkeys in browsers and in the Microsoft Authenticator app.

Important: Your biometric data stays on your device. It is never shared with Microsoft.

Creating a passkey

Do this on the device you want to use a passkey on:

  1. Go to your My Sign-Ins page

Note: If you're signed in to Microsoft 365 you can get there by selecting your profile picture, selecting "View account", then the Security info" tab

  2. Choose "Add sign-in method"

  3. Select "Passkey" or "Passkey in Microsoft Authenticator"

The Microsoft Authenticator app can use your passkey instead of generating a passcode. This makes signing in quicker and easier. Select "Passkey in Microsoft Authenticator".

  4. Follow the instructions on your device
