IT Help and Support

University Information Services

If you’ve changed your legal name, there are a few different teams you will need to contact to update it on University IT systems. You can also change your display name yourself.

If you’re a student

  1. Send details of your name change along with any supporting documentation to the Student Registry. They will update your name in the Cambridge Students Information System (CamSIS).

  2. Once your name has been updated in CamSIS, contact the User Admin Team via email at user-admin@uis.cam.ac.uk to inform them of the change. They will update your name in the user admin database.

  3. Update your display name in the University Directory, Lookup. This updates your name:

    • in the University-wide Exchange Online address book
    • in Lookup groups
    • in your University Google account
  4. Contact your local card rep if you would like to get a new University card with your changed name.

If you’re a member of staff

  1. Send your name change details and any supporting documents to lifeeventsandleave@admin.cam.ac.uk If you work for the Clinical Schools you should contact cshrstaffhub@admin.cam.ac.uk. They will update your name in the Cambridge Human Resource Information System (CHRIS).

  2. Once your name has been updated in CHRIS, contact the User Admin Team at user-admin@uis.cam.ac.uk to inform them of the change. They will update your name in the user admin database.

If you have an alternative email address (for example, ending in @admin.cam.ac.uk)

When you contact the user admin team, they will also raise a Service Desk ticket to update any alternative email addresses that you have. For example, those ending @admin.cam.ac.uk. These are called aliases.

Your old email address will still work unless you ask to remove the alias. You may want to do this if you've moved departments and do not want to receive emails from your old department.

Once we remove your old email alias, any mail sent to it will fail and generate a delivery failure message. This cannot be customised and will say that the email address doesn't exist. For this reason, we suggest keeping the old email alias. Set up an autoreply to inform recipients of your new email.

  3. Update your display name in the University Directory, Lookup. This updates your name.

    • in the University-wide Exchange Online address book
    • in Lookup groups
    • in your University Google account.
  4. Contact your local card rep if you would like to get a new University card with your changed name.
