This guidance is for users of Lecture Capture within the teaching spaces in Engineering (LR3B and LR10) and the shared teaching spaces on the Sidgwick Site (Lecture Block rooms 1 - 12, Little Hall and Lady Mitchell Hall), where we are running a Scheduled Lecture Capture version 3 (SLCv3) pilot.
The pilot aims to enhance the Lecture Capture offering across the University by improving the system and user interface, and standardising equipment. It is running throughout the academic year 2024/25.
Please complete this short form to provide feedback about the SLCv3 facilities.
Upgraded lectern
The lecterns have been upgraded to allow for more equipment integration. They are height adjustable where possible for improved accessibility and comfort.
Lecterns include:
- a control panel. This is securely mounted onto a docking station along with an HDMI cable and a USB-C cable. There is a power outlet on the side of the docking station to charge your devices.
- a microphone charging dock with two lanyard microphones
- a computer screen
- a built-in PC with wireless keyboard and mouse
- cables to connect the presenter's own device (computers and tablets)
- a visualiser with a writing surface
We recommend presenters use the lanyard microphones provided. However, boundary microphones are installed in the ceiling of each lecture room to capture any audio. The boundary microphone switches off when the presenter picks up a lanyard microphone.
Control panel navigation
Selecting the input method
The presenter is offered a choice of input options at startup. Select from:
- Built-in PC access - if you wish to use a USB stick or have not brought your own device
- HDMI - if you are using your own device to present from (suitable for older laptops)
- USB-C - if you are using your own device to present from. This will also charge the device. (suitable for newer laptops and tablets)
Setting up your presentation
The presenter has the option to 'Blank' or 'Freeze' the screen.
- Select 'Blank' to display a blank screen to the audience while you set up your presentation.
- Select 'Freeze' to display selected content on the screen to the audience for example, a welcome or title slide.
Using the Confidence Monitor
The 'Confidence Monitor' allows the presenter to see what content is being captured for a recording. In the example below, the PC screen and the presenter camera during a lecture recording:
Understanding the visual recording indicator
There is an LED strip around the edge of the control panel which indicates when the recording is in session.
- A red LED strip around the edge when the recording is in session. It will also have the words 'Lecture capture is recording' at the top, the name of the recording on the top left and the status of the recording. You can choose to 'Pause' or 'Stop' the recording. If 'Stop' is selected, this cannot be undone and the recording will finish.
- A blue LED strip around the control panel will flash when the recording has been paused and a 'Lecture capture is paused' message will be displayed inside a red banner at the top of the screen.
- When the 'Pause' feature is activated or deactivated, the LED light will flash red for up to 10 seconds as it switches between settings.
- Select Resume and the recording will continue. The red LED light will stop flashing and go to a steady red light.
- Select Stop and the recording will stop. Please note this cannot be undone.
Seeing which microphones are in use
You can see which microphones are in use, the volume they are set to or whether they are muted.
Setting the camera angle
Use the camera view to decide where the camera should point, or select from one of three preset options:
- Preset 1 - points towards the lectern
- Preset 2 - points towards the project screen or white board
- Present 3 - points towards the wider room.
Activating privacy mode
Select privacy mode to mute all microphones, including the ceiling boundary microphone. The camera will turn to face the wall.
