IT Help and Support

University Information Services

What the service is

During 2024 University Managed Desktop (UMDs) will change anti-malware applications. The Microsoft Defender anti-malware application will replace the Trellix anti-malware application. For UMD users, Defender offers the same anti-malware protection as Trellix.

Benefits

Microsoft Defender will include additional Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) functionality. It sends UIS automatic alerts if malware activity is suspected,  This provides UIS with the ability to take action to prevent the malware from spreading.

How the Defender application is deployed

Defender will be deployed automatically to all UMDs by UIS. It does not require installation by the user or IT support staff. Some messages may indicate that the anti-malware client is changing. No action is required.

UIS will contact institutional IT staff prior to any UMDs in their institution changing to Defender.
