Sign in to your device using facial recognition, fingerprint identification or PIN code instead of your username and password with Windows Hello for Business (WHfB).
Once set up, the next time you sign in to your device, you won't have the option to use your password. Only the Windows Hello face, fingerprint or PIN options will be available.
We are testing biometric sign-in for the University Managed Desktop (UMD) service. If you would like to test this feature in your institution, please contact the UIS Service Desk.
Prerequisites
- WHfB will need to have been enabled for devices in your institution.
- Cloud built Windows 11 UMD device, Dell Latitude laptop or single user device.
- Signing in with your face requires a Hello compatible camera.
- Signing in with your fingerprint requires your device to have a fingerprint reader.
If you do not have a compatible finger reader or Hello-compatible camera, you will only be prompted to set up a PIN.
Set up your biometric sign-in
Once WHfB has been enabled for your device, when you next log-in with your password you will be asked if you want to use your fingerprint to sign in.
If you have a Windows Hello compatible camera you will also have the option to set up facial recognition before setting up your PIN.
Follow the steps below to set up biometric sign-in
- Select 'Yes, set up' to proceed
- Rest your finger on the fingerprint sensor and follow the instructions on screen. You may be prompted to lift your finder and touch the sensor again.
- Once complete, you'll see a 'you're all set' message. Select 'Next' to proceed.
- Select 'Next' to create a PIN
- You will be asked to approve the sign-in request. Open your Authenticator app and enter the number shown on your screen.
- You will be asked to set up a PIN. Tick the check box to 'Include letters and symbols'. Add and confirm a new PIN. Do not reuse an existing password or PIN. Select 'OK' to confirm.
- Select 'OK' at the bottom of the 'All set!' message to complete the process.
