Before you begin
You may find it useful to have this page open on a device other than the one you are trying to connect – for example, a tablet or mobile phone – so that you can refer to them more easily. If you don't have a second device, you could also copy the instructions to a Word file or print them.
Set up your connection
- Open your Settings page – you can find this by typing "settings" in the Cortana search box and clicking on Settings.
- Select "Network & Internet".
- Choose "VPN" from the menu. "Add a VPN connection" will appear – select it.
- Fill in or confirm the fields as follows:
VPN provider: Windows (built-in) – click to confirm
Connection name: ACN VPN
Server name or address: vpn.admin.cam.ac.uk
VPN type: Automatic
Type of sign-in: Username and password
Username: leave this field blank
Password: leave this field blank
Remember my sign-in info: make sure the box is ticked. - Choose "Save" (the settings screen will close).
- On the "Network & Internet" settings page, select "Change adapter options" in the "Related settings" menu.
- Right-click on the ACN VPN icon (showing as 'Disconnected'), and choose "Properties".
- Choose the "Security" tab, and under the heading "Type of VPN", select "IKEv2" from the drop-down list.
- Under the heading "Data encryption", select "Require encryption (disconnect if server declines)".
- Under the heading "Authentication", select the button next to "Use Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP)".
- Select the "OK" button. The panel will close.
- Enter "Control Panel" in the Cortana search box on the Windows taskbar.
- Select "Network and Sharing Centre".
- In the new window, select "Change adapter settings" on the left panel.
- Right-click "ACN VPN" and choose "Properties".
- Select the "Networking" tab.
- Select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPV4) and choose "Properties".
- Select "Advanced...".
- Select the "DNS" tab.
- Tick "Register this connection address in DNS".
- Tick "Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration".
- In the box next to "DNS suffix for this connection:", type "internal.admin.cam.ac.uk" (without the quotes).
- Select "OK" to close the open dialogue boxes.
Connecting to the network
- Visit the UIS Network Access Tokens site. Create a Network Access Token for using the VPN on your device, and keep the window/tab open in readiness for when you'll need to copy the username and password.
- Open "Settings" – you can find this by typing "settings" in the Start (or Cortana) search box and choosing "Settings".
- Choose "Network & Internet".
- Select "VPN" from the list on the left. Choose "ACN VPN".
- A button labelled "Connect" will appear – select it.
- A "Sign in" box will appear. Fill in the fields as follows:
Username: enter the username for the Network Access Token you created in step 1. It will usually be in the format CRSid+device@cam.ac.uk – for example, abc123+laptopvpn@cam.ac.uk.
Password: paste in the password for the Network Access Token you created in step 1. - Select the "OK" button.The "Sign in" box will close. "Connected" should appear below the ACN VPN icon.
Troubleshooting your connection
If you can't connect to the University network, you can try to restart the service.
- Go to your Settings page and type administrative tools in the search box. Select "Administrative Tools" in the list.
- Choose "Services" in the list. Check that the status of IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules is Running. If it isn't, double-click to highlight the IKE and AuthIP line, and change the Startup type to Automatic.
