When to use an image
Only use an image if it helps you to explain your content more clearly.
Images used to show University life should reflect the diversity of our staff and students.
When to avoid an image
You should avoid:
- using images of text. Screen readers cannot access this information.
- staged, stock images. You should use real, unposed images of the University where possible. Find out more about images on the brand resources website
- using lots of images where one will suffice
- manipulated or AI-generated images
Content standards for images
- Images must have alt text if they convey information. Find out how to write good alt text from GOV.UK.
- If images are for decoration, they do not need alt text and can be marked as decorative. You can do this by adding 2 double quotation marks in the alt text field: ""
- Images of charts or diagrams need to meet colour contrast ratios. Information must be explained in alt text or as part of the body copy. See data visualisation guidance from Harvard University.
- Avoid using images of text. Screen readers cannot access this information.
- Images must be credited. Find out about using images on University websites.
