23 October 2024
The current Administrative Computing Network (ACN) desktop service is being replaced by the new University Managed Desktop (UMD).
Why are we retiring the ACN?
The current ACN desktop is approaching end of life. It is not well suited to hybrid working and does not meet the requirements of the systems management policy.
These devices need to be migrated or replaced as soon as possible. This includes any ACN devices taken home during the pandemic.
They will stop working before the end of 2025.
Benefits of University Managed Desktops (UMDs)?
The UMD is better suited to remote working. It provides newer features such as self-service apps so that you can easily download Microsoft 365 and Office 365 software. You can also access network drives with a single click.
Check if you have an ACN device
If you’re not sure if your device uses the ACN desktop, there are a couple of ways you can tell.
Is Microsoft Office 2016 installed?
On the device login screen do you see ‘internal’ listed in the domain field?
Still not sure? Find out more about to how to identify ACN devices.
Upgrade your device
Check with your local IT contact or line manager before raising a call with the Service Desk.
If your device is still within the warranty period, it can be upgraded to use the UMD service. You can raise a ticket with the Service Desk to upgrade.
If the warranty no longer covers it, you can order a new laptop using the Self-service portal.
If you're unsure, please speak to your local IT support member or contact the UIS Service desk.
Tell us about your old devices
If you have any unused or unwanted devices, please contact the Service Desk. We will arrange for the item to be returned and securely disposed of.
