University Information Services

UIS has now enabled the ‘Shared Channels’ feature in the University’s Microsoft tenancy. Shared Channels widen the ability to collaborate using Teams.

What are Shared Channels?

  • Shared Channels are created within an existing Team, but they are totally independent of the host Team’s membership
  • Can be shared with people, groups or other Teams
  • For now, they can only be shared within the University’s tenancy

User guides

A new web page explains when and why to choose a Shared Channel, how to create one and invite others to join it, and provides links to Microsoft’s technical documentation:

Collaborating with people who are not in the University’s Microsoft tenancy

Shared Channels can also enable collaboration with external users without them having to switch between their Microsoft tenancies. UIS has not yet enabled this capability because it requires co-ordinated action between both the University’s and the external tenancies’ administrators. We did not want this to delay University users getting the benefits of Shared Channels for collaboration with their University colleagues in the meantime.
