The Streaming Media Service (SMS) is one of the platforms the University uses to host media. The technology on which it is built will reach the end of its serviceable life in approximately 12 months’ time.
UIS has started talking to large users of the service to determine their media hosting requirements for a replacement solution. We’ll be expanding this to a broader audience over the coming months.
In the interim, you can continue to use the service, but we recommend you minimise the amount of content uploaded to the SMS to help reduce the migration workload and prevent strain on the system. Additionally, we'd encourage users to undertake housekeeping of media that's no longer needed in preparation for a future migration.
Alternative media hosting services are already available for some use cases:
- Panopto for teaching and learning content only (note this would be for a University internal audience only, via Moodle)
- Microsoft Stream (via your University Microsoft account)
- YouTube (via your Google G Suite@Cambridge account)
We'll provide reasonable notice of each stage in this process.
