University Information Services

10 July 2024

ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap) is being retired, and the way ArcGIS is deployed is changing as Esri moves to a web-based subscription service. Users should be encouraged to transition from ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro Advanced if they haven’t already and will need to do so before 1 March 2024.

Activation codes for single-use and concurrent-use licences are being renewed and we should have these in August. If you wish to have more information on what will be included in the new agreement or require a licence for research, please email the Service Desk.

What is changing?

  • ArcMap will be retired on 1 March 2024. There will be no new security patches after March 2024, and ArcMap will not be available for site-wide deployment from 1 August 2024; users will need to migrate to ArcGIS Pro Advanced.

  • Named User licences, assigned via ArcGIS Online, will be the primary method of licensing ArcGIS Pro Advanced and will be the sole option from 1 August 2024.

Further details about ArcGIS Pro Advanced can be found on the ArcGIS Pro resources page.
