Files uploaded to your website should have the same accessible structure as your webpages. This means they need titles, headings, and alt text for any images.

Before uploading a PDF, read the Content Community guidance about using PDFs on websites. PDFs have downsides for user experience and often fail to meet accessibility requirements. Sometimes it may be better to add your content as a web page rather than uploading a file.

Tips for naming files correctly

  • Use a human-friendly file name between 50 and 60 characters.
  • Put the most important words of the file name first.
  • Use lowercase characters.
  • Use hyphens to separate words. Do not use underscore or other special characters to separate words.
  • Do not use short words like: for, in, or, but, and, a, the.
  • If you must include an alphanumeric reference, put it at the end.

To upload a file to a webpage, follow our step-by-step instructions or watch a video.
