We made some changes to the UniofCam-IoT services over the summer. You may need to reconnect your personal devices by following the instructions below.
Which devices can I connect to UniOfCam-Personal-IoT?
This service is for personal devices such as:
- media streaming devices like Apple TV (tvOS 26 and above)
- virtual assistants such as Amazon Alexa
- smart speakers like Amazon Echo or Google Home
- streaming media adapters such as Chromecasts (1st generation Chromecasts are not supported)
- equipment such as printers
- Amazon Kindles (15.18.1 and above)
It's for devices like these that can't be set up on eduroam, but can accept a wifi password. They also need to be able to support WPA2-PSK with AES encryption. If in doubt, refer to the instructions provided by your device's manufacturer.
This service runs on an enterprise (business) grade network. It has network restrictions and higher security measures. Connecting domestic-grade equipment to this network can sometimes cause connection issues or reduced functionality. This can include smart home devices such as doorbells or thermostats.
Setting up and managing institutional devices on UniofCam-IoT
IT staff can set up institutionally owned devices on the UniOfCam-IoT wifi network. These are devices owned by the institution, and not an individual, that are unable to connect to eduroam using eduroam Institutional Tokens. Guidance is available on the IT staff support SharePoint site (access is restricted to IT staff). Please contact your local IT team if you need to connect an institutional device to the IoT network.
Device Support
We strongly advise upgrading to the latest software version that your device can support as older versions may have incompatible software or drivers and may be vulnerable to security issues.
- Android: Only the versions of Android still receiving updates from Google (currently versions 14, 15, 16 and 17) are supported.
- iOS: Only the versions of iOS still receiving updates from Apple (currently iOS versions 15 (limited), 16 (limited), 18 or 26) are supported.
- Windows 11: We currently support 25H2 and newer versions of Windows 11.
- Apple MacOS: You must be running, Sonoma (14), Sequoia (15) or Tahoe (26) because older versions are no longer receiving patches and security updates.
Devices you cannot use
Devices such as wireless extenders, bridges and routers are not allowed to connect to the Wireless Service. Connecting these types of devices could affect the service for others.
Who can use UniOfCam-Personal-IoT
The service is designed for staff and students to use with personal devices in College and University buildings. If you're not a member of the University, please use the UniOfCam-Guest wifi network.
It's not intended for devices that are shared by lots of people in an institution. This includes things like shared office printers and infrastructure devices like a building management system.
If your device works with eduroam, we strongly encourage you to use this instead. You will be able to connect to eduroam wifi automatically around Cambridge. And when visiting participating institutions around the world. A connection on eduroam also has better security.
The service is subject to the University Data Network's terms and conditions.
Where can I use UniOfCam-Personal-IoT?
This service is only available in College and University buildings where the wifi networks are provided by the University Wireless Service. Some Colleges prefer to run their own wireless networks, and you won't be able to access this service there. See University Wireless coverage for lists of participating Colleges and institutions.
Set up a personal device on UniOfCam-Personal-IoT
Important: Be aware that your devices can connect to each other on the network through a technology called Aruba AirGroup. Stay alert to anyone else trying to access your ‘personal network’ as this poses a security risk.
1. Go to https://iot.wireless.cam.ac.uk
2. Select "Sign in with University IT account".
3. Enter your University email address using the format CRSid@cam.ac.uk. Select “Next”
4. Enter your University IT account password. Select “Sign in”
5. Select "Yes" when asked if you want to stay signed in.
6. You will see your wifi password and a QR code. Enter this password or scan the QR code to connect your device to the network. You can use the same password for all of your devices.
Do not share your password with anyone else: it is connected to your University account. You are responsible for the device connected to the University Data Network.
If you scan the QR code, your device should automatically find the network. Enter your password when prompted.
If the network does not appear automatically, go to the wifi settings on your device. You should be able to find "UnifOfCam-Personal-IoT" in the list of available networks and enter your password.
7. You need to regenerate a new wifi password if:
- you forget your password
- lose a device
- think your password has been hacked or stolen
Once you have a new password, all devices that used the old one will need to be updated.
Regenerating a new password
1. Go to https://iot.wireless.cam.ac.uk
2. Click "Regenerate Wi-Fi Password"
3. Click "Regenerate" on the pop-up message that asks if you’re sure you want a new password.
4. You will see your new wifi password and a QR code. Enter this password or scan the QR code to reconnect your device to the network. You will need to update the password for all your devices. Do not share it with anyone else.
