University Information Services

The following instructions are for configuring the University of Cambridge eduroam service for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr). Other versions of Ubuntu, and alternative Linux distributions may have slightly different screen layouts or settings and steps.

Before you begin, please ensure:

  • You are in a location within the University of Cambridge or affiliated institutions where the eduroam wireless network is available.  If in doubt, please speak to your local IT support or the UIS Service Desk.
  • You have created a Network Access Token for your device on the Network Access Token site.

Please follow these steps:

  1. From the menu bar at the top of the screen, click on the Network Connections icon (which will typically look like a quarter-circle fan shape, if you are not connected to a wireless network; if you are connected to a wired network, it will often show as a pair of up and down arrows):

  2. From Wi-Fi Networks section of the menu, select eduroam:

If you do not see eduroam listed, please move to a location where eduroam is available.  If you are unsure, please speak to your local IT support staff, or visit the UIS Service Desk locations, where Wi-Fi is available.

  3. A dialog box will open, asking you specify the authentication information required by the network.  Enter the details below and press Connect when complete:
    • Authentication: Protected EAP (PEAP)
    • Anonymous identity: (i.e. without the leading CRSid)
    • CA certificate: QuoVadis_Root_CA_2.pem - when you select this, you will be taken to the file browser: select Computer in the left bar and navigate to etc > ssl > certs and find QuoVadis_Root_CA_2.pem (be careful not to select any of the other QuoVadis entries)
    • PEAP version: Automatic
    • Inner authentication: MSCHAPv2
    • Username: The username of the Network Access Token you created for this device in the format – e.g.
    • Password: The 16-character password for the same Network Access Token
    • Ask for this password every time: leave unticked
    • Show password: (you can tick this if you wish to check the password is entered correctly: it will have no effect on the eventual configuration)

Leave any other options at their default settings.

  4. After few seconds, you should be connected to the eduroam network and this confirmed by a notification being displayed in the top right corner of the screen, as well as the Network Connections icon changing to the wireless fan symbol:
