Using a Password Reset Token

To reset your UIS Password (or individual Raven, Hermes or Desktop Services passwords) you will need a Password Reset Token from your local computer officer, or the UIS Service Desk.

Once you have a Password Reset Token, you'll need to use a web browser to access the UIS Password Management Application to reset your password for yourself.

How to reset your passwords with a Password Reset Token

To use your Password Reset Token, you will need access to a web browser.

QR codeThe quickest way to do this is to scan the QR code on the printed slip using a QR reading application on your mobile device. This will open the Reset your password page in your web browser and pre-fill your Password Reset Token, ready for you to reset your password.

Alternatively, you can follow these steps:

  1. Go to the UIS Password Management Application (

    Note: If you are using a Managed Cluster Service (MCS) computer to do this, you will be asked to log in before you can use the computer. Enter the username "signup", and leave the password blank. You will then see the UIS Password Management Application page.

  2. Click the Use token> button.
    This will take you to the Reset your password page.

  3. Enter your CRSid.

  4. Enter the 16-character Password Reset Token value.

  5. Think of a new password, and enter it in the New password field.
    We recommend you use your existing Hermes password, if you know it. Otherwise, you must remember to update your email client's account settings to use the new password you will create here.

    Using the built-in password generator tool

    If you click the Generate a random password link shown below the New password field, you will see a truly random password suggestion. You can copy and paste it into the new password field if you want to use it, or click the Generate another random password link to get another suggestion:

    The strength of your new password will be shown as you type. We recommend using a password with a rating of 'Very strong':

  6. Enter your new password again in the Confirm password field.
    Make a note of your new password, and keep it in a safe place – away from your computer – until you memorise it.

  7. Click the Set password> button.
    You will see a confirmation message showing which of your passwords have just been updated:
    Note: changes may take up to 30 minutes to take effect across all systems.

    Note: If you joined the University before 18th February 2014, changing any one of your individual Raven, Hermes or Desktop Services passwords will upgrade your all accounts to use your new UIS Password for these instead.

If you use an email program to get your Hermes email...

Your email program (e.g. Apple Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird) will still be configured to use your old Hermes password. If your new UIS Password is different to your old Hermes password, you must update the account settings in your email program to use your new UIS Password, otherwise you will stop receiving email on your computer or mobile device. Note: The password change may take up to 30 minutes to take effect. Most email programs will stop getting new mail immediately your new UIS Password becomes active, but in some cases the change may not be noticeable until you close the email program or restart your device.
