If you create an educational video using other software or a different platform, you can can make it available to your students by uploading the video to Panopto.

This ensures that only students that are enrolled on a course have access to your videos. You can:

  • add the video to a playlist
  • add quizzes
  • use Panopto captioning tools
  • engage in online discussions

Ensure that the recording you wish to upload is stored on your device and has been downloaded from its original platform or location (such as Zoom, Teams, Google Meet).

 

Upload a video from your laptop or desktop

To upload an existing video so that it can be shared with students in Moodle:

1. Go to your Moodle course, locate the Panopto block on the right-hand side and click Course Settings

The Panopto web interface is displayed, with the Settings window for the course folder opened. The availability settings, which control whether and when students can view videos in this folder from Moodle. Close the Settings window to return to the course folder.

2. At the top of the page, click the Create button to display the dropdown list of options and click Upload media.

3. The Add files to window is displayed. If required, you can select a different folder to upload to, but the availability settings may be different. If you want to edit the video before publishing it, you can upload it to My Folder and publish it to the relevant course later.

4. Either drag and drop the video files you want to upload to the space indicated, or click and browse for the files using Windows Explorer or Finder. 

5. The upload process may take some time, depending on the file size. For more information on supported file formats, see Panopto's guidance on supported media file types.

6. Once the upload has completed, close the window. The video can be reviewed and edited from Panopto as required.

Upload a video created on your mobile device

If you've created a video on your phone or tablet and you want to share it with students in Moodle, you can either:

  • transfer it to your desktop or laptop and then upload it
  • install the Panopto iOS or Android app on your device and use it to upload a video directly from your device. As video files tend to be very large, you should not email a video to yourself or a colleague

If you want to transfer a video stored on your mobile device to a laptop or desktop, you can upload the video to an online location such as Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive. You have access to these storage options with your CRSid (see the UIS guidance on storage options).

  1. Search the App Store or Google Play Store to install the relevant app for your device
  2. Log in to the app with your CRSid and copy the files across

To access the files from your desktop or laptop:

  1. Log in to Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive on your machine (either in a web browser or the relevant app) and download the files
  2. Upload the files to Panopto as described above. Apple users can also airdrop files from their iPhone/iPad to their Mac.

Alternatively, you can install the Panopto app on your device and use it to upload files from your device storage directly to Panopto. The Panopto app is available from the App Store and Google Play Store for iOS and Android devices. Install the app and log in with your CRSID to upload videos from your device to Panopto. Once you've uploaded a video to Panopto, you can review and edit it as required before publishing it to Moodle or add it to another video as an additional stream.
