Fake websites

Scammers use fake websites to harvest your login, personal and financial details.

Top tips

Do check the domain name is the one you expect, e.g. 'raven.cam.ac.uk'.

Don't enter your login ID and password until you are sure the website is legitimate.

Do check that a site is secure.

  • Does the web address start with 'https'?
  • Does it have a padlock that drops down when clicked?
  • Is the site owner the person or organisation you expect?

Don't trust web sites that have:

  • no contact details on the site
  • intrusive adverts crowding the page or that are explicit or suggestive
  • adverts that ask you to take a survey.
Do click on the padlock. A drop-down box will usually show the web site owner's name. Use this to confirm whether the site is real. For Raven, the owner's name is always 'University of Cambridge'.

Don't forget to check that the site is valid before entering any user name and password.

Do check for safe browsing by entering the web address into Google's safe browsing diagnositic tool. Don't use the same password for all your accounts.
Do change your password immediately if you think you have accidentally entered your University details into a fake site. You can do this at the UIS Password Management site.

Don't hesitate to let us know of any problems you encounter online.

Do use a password manager like LastPass to remember all your passwords. Don't write your passwords down.

Check to see if your account has been used in a scam by checking on a site like https://haveibeenpwned.com. If it has, make sure you do not use the password that has been compromised elsewhere.

Don't sign up to every web form you encounter. Think before you enter your details.

Ask your local Computer Officer or the UIS for advice if you are uncertain about a website.

Don't take risks. If in doubt, please ask.

UIS Christmas closure 24 December 2019 to 2 January 2020

UIS, including the UIS Service Desk and Reception in the Roger Needham Building will be closed for Christmas and New Year from Tuesday 24 December at 17:00. We will re-open on Thursday 2 January 2020 at 08:30. The Service Desk will also be closed, but we have an emergency contact in case you need one.

New system helps the University submit eligible staff to the REF

A new version of the REF Staff Information system was launched on 20 November, helping the REF team to ensure that eligible staff are submitted to the REF with correct and complete data. The project team adopted a unique approach to deliver the system on time under considerable pressure.
