Windows 10 Release and Upgrade FAQ

Microsoft have issued a general FAQ on Windows 10 which is available at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-faq

Windows 10 is due for general release on July 29th 2015. Users with most versions of Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 will be entitled to a free upgrade in the first year of its release, the version depending on the existing version of Windows 7 or 8/8.1.

Users of Windows XP or Windows Vista are not entitled to a free upgrade. A new purchase will be needed for these systems.

Windows 7 users and Windows 8.1 users with Windows Update enabled will see the app as a Windows icon in the system tray at the bottom right-hand side of the screen (the white windows icon as below)

Upgrading University-owned PCs

If you are using a PC which was purchased for you by your Department or College we strongly recommend that you consult your local IT Support staff BEFORE downloading or upgrading to Windows 10.

What to do before you upgrade

  • Ensure that you have safely backed up all your files, preferably to an external drive/remote storage/USB.
  • Remove any existing antivirus software.
  • Check for application and hardware compatability by using the Get Windows 10 app (the white Windows icon in the system tray).
  • Right-click on the icon and choose 'Check your upgrade status'.

In the 'Get Windows 10 app', click the stack of three lines (sometimes called the hamburger menu) and then click 'Check your PC'.

You should then get a report of what applications can and cannot be upgraded. For example some older Intel CPUs like the 6300 cannot be upgraded to Windows 10. You may also want to wait to upgrade if certain applications are not yet available for Windows 10.

Warning: The Get Windows 10 app may remove incompatible software during the upgrade.

Driver Problems

The most commonly experienced problem (which arises from being an early adopter) is that there are not functional drivers for a component of your PC eg mouse, wireless card, video card. In this case you need to revert to the previous driver. Microsoft's article on how to do this is:

Upgrade Windows 7 machines before the operating system reaches end of life on 14 January 2020

Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7 on 14 January 2020. The good news is that you may be entitled to a free upgrade to Windows 10, if your institution is participating in the University's EES agreement.
