General settings for using the University LDAP Directory to find email addresses

The information on this page is generic. If you are using one of the mail programs shown in the menu on the left then you should follow the instructions for your particular mail program.

Note. The University LDAP Directory is only available to mail clients on computers on the Cambridge network. If you are away from Cambridge and wish to use the University LDAP Directory then you will need to use the VPN service so that your computer appears to be on the Cambridge network. Alternatively you can use Hermes Webmail.

If possible you should configure access to the University LDAP Directory for use with your Cambridge account, rather than as a global setting. This will leave you free, if you have other accounts, to set different LDAP directories for use with these where relevant. Note that this kind of tailored per-account configuration does not seem to be possible with all mail programs.

Mail programs use different terminology for the settings. The list below shows common names and the setting you should use.

  • LDAP server; Hostname; Server name:
    ldap.lookup.cam.ac.uk
  • Base Distinguished Name; Base DN; Search Base:
    ou=people,o=University of Cambridge,dc=cam,dc=ac,dc=uk (be sure to type it exactly as it appears on this page)
  • Nickname; Service name:
    enter a suitable name, e.g. University directory to make it easy to recognize.

The University LDAP server supports secure LDAP connections. Use of secure connections is good practice to secure the personal data provided by the service. To set this, look for a setting such as Use secure connection (SSL), Use Secure Sockets Layer or This server requires a secure connection (SSL) and select it. Check that the Port number (number by Directory Service (LDAP)) changes to 636.
Note: If you intend to use the UniofCam wireless service you must use this setting since UniofCam does not allow insecure LDAP connections.

Using the LDAP Directory to find an address

Again, different mail programs take different approaches. In some you will be able to open a new mail message and enter your search term in the To: field. In others you will need to find a specific tool to search or lookup names in the directory.

In general, you can type the family name (or partial name) of the person you want to search for. Where possible use 4 or more characters as this will make the search more efficient. If the search returns just the right person the name and address may automatically be added to the recipient list of your email or you may need to select it. If the search returns a list of names you will need to select the correct name to add. The procedure can be repeated until you have added all the required recipients to your message.

Your University GoogleDrive: 20GB quota limit from December 2022

Google is replacing its G Suite for Education model licensing model in October 2022. As a result, there will be a new limit of 20GB on personal GoogleDrive spaces provided with G Suite@Cambridge accounts.
