If you have e-mail addresses on more than one system, it is usually convenient to arrange for all of your mail to be forwarded to one system, so that you do not need to check more than one incoming mail box. You can often simplify things for yourself and your correspondents by using your @cam address, as described in leaflet @cam addresses, delivery options and the public directory.

Another reason to redirect your mail is if you are going away temporarily and will have a new account on a system at your destination. Note, however, that this is unlikely to be worthwhile for short visits, since you can normally connect from wherever you are to your normal mail system and read your mail. To redirect your mail:

Hermes Webmail

  1. Use a web browser to go to https://webmail.hermes.cam.ac.uk/ and login to Hermes.
  2. Select Settings in the Application Bar
  3. Select Mail Processing
  4. Select Redirect
  5. Tick Enable and type in the Redirection address: e.g. me@somewherelse.ac.uk
  6. If you want to leave a copy on Hermes then tick Leave Copy on Hermes - N.B. use this with care as your mail could build up and take your inbox over quota (this would eventually result in mail being returned to the sender).
  7. Select Update button.
  8. Remember to Logout of Hermes when you have finished.

Old Hermes Webmail

  1. Use a web browser to go to https://old-webmail.hermes.cam.ac.uk/ and login to Hermes.
  2. Click on the Manage icon at the top of the page.
  3. Click on the Redirect button and tick Enable Redirection.
  4. Specify the Redirect address: e.g. me@somewherelse.ac.uk
  5. Tick Save copy in this account if you want to keep a copy in your account. N.B. use this with care as your mail could build up and take your inbox over quota (this would eventually result in mail being returned to the sender).
  6. Click on the Apply button.
  7. Quit Hermes by clicking on the Logout icon at the top right of the web page.

You can check that the redirection is working by sending a message to yourself and making sure that it is forwarded to the correct destination.

Note that once a redirection is set up, it will be in effect until you cancel the redirection or the account is closed (at which point incoming mail is rejected).

To cancel a redirection log in to Hermes, follow the steps for either New Hermes Webmail or Old Hermes Webmail (depending on choice) to get to the correct settings screen, then untick the enable box and, for safety, remove the redirection address.

Easier way for Departments and NSIs to get ‘bolt-on’ Office 365 licences for staff
