eduroam for Cambridge users

How to set up and use eduroam both in Cambridge and elsewhere.

eduroam will provide you with wireless Internet access. When you are in Cambridge you can choose to connect wirelessly via either eduroam, the University of Cambridge Wireless Service or, if one exists, a wireless service provided by your College or Institution. A list of institutions with UIS wireless access points is available.

If you are connecting to eduroam in Cambridge, UIS offers eduroam supporting WPA2-AES, with no IPv6 support. Details of port restrictions are given on a separate page

When you are away from Cambridge, and at a site that also participates in eduroam, you will be able to connect to their eduroam service using your Cambridge eduroam credentials. This means you will be able to access most of the services you use when you are connected to the CUDN. For some local services you will need to use your Raven password as your computer will not be using a Cambridge address. If you also have a VPN account you can use that to let your computer appear as if it were on the CUDN.

Most sites participating in eduroam use the eduroam network name. If you go to a site that does not, you should follow local instructions to connect to the correct service.

Note that when you use eduroam at another organisation you are bound by our AUP (ISC rules and guidelines), the Janet AUP and the AUP of the organisation you are visiting. Breach of AUP could result in disciplinary procedures.

Before you leave Cambridge

  • Check whether the institution you are visiting participates in eduroam (UK institutions or elsewhere.)
  • Make sure you have configured, and checked, your system. Configuration notes are currently available for a number of platforms (see below).

Configuration notes for various platforms and devices

Generic instructions

A set of generic instructions is available. This may help users with devices not listed below.


Most Windows platforms (108 and 8.17 and Vista) can use the eduroam CAT (Configuration Assistant Tool).  Windows RT (8 and 8.1) must be configured manually, as described below.

Before you follow the link to download the tool for your Windows version:

  • You must be connected to the network fully (e.g. using the University Wireless Service (UniOfCam), or an office, College or home connection).
  • Make sure that you have your credentials (eduroam identifier (in the form of and Network access token (password)) from the UIS Tokens service.

Now you need to download and then run the correct tool for your Windows version. Where the tool asks for your username you need to enter your eduroam identifier (in the form of, where it asks for your password you need to enter your Network access token.

The eduroam CAT sets the configuration automatically to leave it in the state it would be in if you had gone through the steps manually. It does not leave anything else (e.g. utility, autoupdating application) on your system.

Note that the tool is automatically downloaded. Check your usual download location. You are then returned to this page.

IE/Edge - known issue (now believed to be resolved):
If IE/Edge reports the CAT file as corrupt or invalid when you try to RUN the file within the web-browser, please download and SAVE the file, then RUN it from your local copy instead.

McAfee – known issue:
Occasionally, McAfee may detect this file as malware. This is a false positive. Please turn off McAfee temporarily if you have this problem.

Can I turn SmartScreen on or off?

In most cases, yes. In some cases—like on a workplace network—this setting is managed by a system administrator, and the setting can't be changed.

  1. On the Start screen, tap or click Internet Explorer to open Internet Explorer.
  2. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.
    (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings.)
  3. Tap or click Privacy, and under Web services, turn SmartScreen to Off.

Mac OS X

If you have an eduroam configuration already installed (e.g. from another University), you may need to remove it before you can add the new one from the instructions above; see Removal of 802.1X profiles on OS X.

Mobile Devices

Janet(UK)'s TERENA contract for server certificates means that the QuoVadis Root CA 2 certificate is needed. Some phones (including Nokia and Sony Ericsson) do not have this certificate in their list of Certification Authorities.
