Preliminary actions
- Record the Dell Service Tag and computer hostname. We need this information to remove the device from Intune management and for software licensing management. It prevents creating orphaned devices.
- Make sure all important data and work are backed up before proceeding. This will help avoid unexpected data loss.
- Reclaim, deactivate, or reassign any software licenses linked to the device or user.
- Ensure that you connect the device to power using the appropriate power adapter.
- Ensure you are able to run the command line interface with elevated privileges.
- Ensure you have an internet connection. Wifi is sufficient.
Clear BIOS password, Asset tag, Ownership tag
- Download and install Dell Command Configure, and check compatibility with the device.

- Run the command below with elevated privileges and use the relevant directory where the downloaded executable is located. C:\Directory_for_BIOS_Update\FilenameHere.exe /DellLogo
Note: You do not have to perform any BIOS updates. And, if no updates are available, the command below will still function, just click the 'Exit' button when presented in the GUI.
Clear the TPM
- In the BIOS setup, go to Security.
- Select the option to clear the TPM.
- Click "Apply changes".
Wipe the system drive
Enter the BIOS and go to Security to perform a Dell Data Wipe or use your preferred method.
Note: Instructions can be found on the Dell website to allow "efficient erasure for repurpose or redeployment".
Please note that steps may vary by device. Following erasure, the device may fail to initialise an network connection and initiate a Support Assist scan. You can skip by following the onscreen instruction (to Press F2). The device will also fail to see an internal boot drive. But, you can image the device from USB using your own methods or set it up for UMD again using Dell Image Assist and our relevant wim file on a USB.
Intune Management and software auditing
Submit a remove device from UMD service request. Include the computer's Dell Service Tag and hostname to remove the device from Intune management and software license management. This prevents creating any orphaned devices. This will allow device removal from Intune Devices, Windows Autopilot Devices, Microsoft Azure/Entra ID.
