What is the iOS & iPadOS component of the University Managed Desktop (UMD) service?

This is one component of the wider UMD service.

The aim of this service is to provide a suitable environment for managing iOS and iPadOS devices.

What are the benefits?

  • Using current best practices and technologies for managing Apple devices.
  • Network agnostic device management.
  • Configuration can applied to install printers, mount shares, set preferences and more.
  • Users can use their own Apple ID.
  • Devices can be re-provisioned at any time from any location.
  • Application and operating system updates can be automatically updated or delegated to user control.
  • Devices that have been lost or stolen remain under management and can be locked/wiped remotely.
  • Site IT staff have oversight of their devices though the management tools.
  • Improved security of both hardware and software.
  • Apps and configuration can be applied automatically.
  • Uses current best practices and technologies for managing Apple devices to simplify deployment and configuration. 
  • Self Service portal allows users to install applications from a curated portal.
  • Device remains managed on virtually any network.
  • System updates can be automatically updated or delegated to user control.
  • Security improved as devices that have been lost or stolen remain under management and can be locked/wiped remotely.
  • Site IT staff have oversight of their devices though the management tools.

Uses Apple Enterprise functionality comprising

  • Mobile Device Management (MDM)
  • Device Enrolment (DEP)
  • Volume Purchasing (VPP)

In conjunction with Jamf Pro, the current leader in Apple device management.

How do I access it?

Chargeable service of £3/month at institutional level.

Supported Hardware

Supported hardware must meeting these requirements:

  • Supports current and one previous version of iOS
  • Available in University of Cambridge Device Enrolment Pool

Your University GoogleDrive: 20GB quota limit from December 2022

19 January 2022

Google is replacing its G Suite for Education model licensing model in October 2022. As a result, there will be a new limit of 20GB on personal GoogleDrive spaces provided with G Suite@Cambridge accounts. If your GoogleDrive usage exceeds 20GB after 1 December 2022, your University account GoogleDrive will become read-only until your usage is brought below 20GB.

Moodle offline for upgrade during 06:00–12:00 on Tuesday 11 January
