Practical advice and recording equipment loans

Professional video production advice, and equiment loan services from the SMS Support team.

Producing and editing video and audio can be a complex business requiring a high level of skill.

The Streaming Media Service (SMS) support team are able to give some advice about the best way of recording an event, and may be able to loan recording equipment (registered users of the SMS see https://wiki.csx.cam.ac.uk/sms/SMS_equipment_loans). Enquiries to sms-support@uis.cam.ac.uk.

UIS makes available the following video editing facilities on the MCS Macs:

  • Apple's iMovie software (on all Macs)
  • Final Cut Pro X (Phoenix Teaching Room 2)

There are Firewire ports on all machines so external hard disks containing files can be connected. Any student or member of staff can request a Desktop Services account.

In some of the University lecture theatres you can request that events are recorded – enquire when you are booking venues.

You must be aware of the legal issues regarding consent when you video or audio record an event (see also: Legal issues in media publishing).

UIS enrolled all members of the University in our Google G Suite account, known as G Suite@Cambridge, on 2 May.

Upgrade Windows 7 machines before the operating system reaches end of life on 14 January 2020

Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7 on 14 January 2020. The good news is that you may be entitled to a free upgrade to Windows 10, if your institution is participating in the University's EES agreement.
