Why do I have to do this?
You must set up multiple sign-in methods (second factors) for your University IT account. This is more secure than just a password. It protects your personal information and the University’s systems and data.
You can also use these sign-in methods to sign in to your account and to recover your password if you forget it.
Before you start
We recommend using a desktop computer or similar for the initial setup. You will need to scan a QR code on the screen using your phone.
How to set up your sign-in methods
1. If you're new to the University, you'll be prompted to set up your second-factor sign-in methods the first time you sign in to a Microsoft 365 app with your University IT account.
2. Download Microsoft Authenticator to your phone or tablet from the Apple App Store or Google Play App Store. If you don't want to use Microsoft Authenticator, select 'I want to use a different authenticator app'.
Select "Next" once you've done this.
3. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone. If prompted, allow notifications. Add an account, and select "Work or school".
4. You will see a QR code on your desktop screen. Use the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone to scan the QR code.
5. You'll be asked to open Microsoft Authenticator and approve the request to sign in.
The message will include a number that you'll need to enter in the app.
6. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone or tablet.
Enter the number that was displayed in the sign-in window.
7. You will see a message confirming that you've approved the notification.
8. Next, you will be prompted to add a phone number as a second sign-in method.
Choose between phone call verifications or codes sent via text message or WhatsApp.
9. You'll receive a text message containing a six-digit number from Microsoft.
If you have WhatsApp on your phone, you may receive a verification code in WhatsApp instead of text. It will have Microsoft branding and a verified checkmark.
10. Enter the code you've received.
11. You will see a confirmed screen once you have verified your phone number.
12. You will see a confirmation screen confirming that you have successfully set up your second factors.
Select "Done".
Managing your sign-in methods
You can change, remove and update sign in methods at any time by logging in to your University Microsoft account.
Adding additional sign-in methods (second factors) ensures you never lose access to your account. For example, if you damaged your phone but had the authenticator app on a tablet, you can still sign in to your account.
