New Wi-Fi system for devices that can't connect via eduroam

last modified Aug 04, 2020 09:51 AM
We've released a new University Wireless system that allows staff and students to connect personal devices that can't currently connect to the eduroam Wi-Fi service.

This includes media streaming devices like Apple TV and smart speakers like Amazon Echo, as well as equipment such as personal printers. It's designed for staff and students to use in College and University buildings.

You can log into a simple web-based interface with your CRSid and Raven password to add and manage devices. Once you register a device to your account, you'll receive a new Wi-Fi password via email or SMS. It will only work for your registered device.

Further information for IT staff

The new system allows users to register non-dot1x devices to a new SSID, called UniOfCam-IoT, via MAC Address registration.

The first version of the system will include:

  • Device MAC Address registration for personal non-dot1x devices
  • A simple web-based user interface for users to log in with their CRSid and manage devices (add, edit, delete or change MPSK password)
  • The ability to receive MPSK passwords via SMS or email
  • AirGroup (device discovery and communication) functionality between devices associated with the same CRSid and connected to MPSK SSID

Future iterations will add features such as:

  • Expanded AirGroup functionality to include devices connected via eduroam as well as the MPSK SSID, as well as the ability to electively share device connectivity with other CRSids
  • SSID integration with the Wireless Console for statistics and troubleshooting
  • Improved user interface
  • More-complex support for institutional devices

We'll provide further details on future service features as we get closer to launching them.
