IT Help and Support

University Information Services

What’s happening?

We need to delete old, unsupported media files from the University’s Streaming Media Service (SMS) because the system is approaching its maximum storage capacityThe original high-quality ‘master’ copies will be retained. Deleting old files will allow adequate space for users to add new uploads and ensure the service continues to run smoothly.

We’ll be deleting all obsolete formats of media files on 1 July 2021.

Which media files will be removed from the SMS?

We’ll remove the following unsupported and unusable video and sound file formats:

  • Windows Media (wmv)

  • Real Media (ra, rm)

  • Flash Media (flv)

We aren’t removing high quality ‘master’ copies of original files – only the versions of encoded media that can’t be played.

What will this affect?

Any content that has been embedded on webpages will no longer be shown.

What do users need to do?

Web editors and site owners should audit their sites, replacing any embedded videos in the old formats with the supported formats: (Flash media (.flv), Windows Media (.wmv) and Real Media (.ra, .rm).
