IT Help and Support

University Information Services

We've launched a new digital certificate service, and are now onboarding institutions and IT staff. The new Jisc-based service enables IT staff to create and manage a broader range of certificates (TLS, client and code signing) in minutes and at no cost to their institution.

Comparing the old and new certificate services

  Old service New service
Provides TLS certificates only TLS, client and code-signing certificates
Price £20–150 each Free
Who creates/manages UIS IT staff
Time to issue Hours to days Minutes
Renewal Manual Automatic

The old service will stop issuing certificates at the end of July 2021

Jisc is withdrawing the old TLS certificate service at the end of the month, so now is the time to join the new service.

Certificates purchased from the old service

These will be valid until their expiry date, and you'll still be able to download them from the same place until they expire. We'll contact you a month before each certificate is due to expire, so you'll have plenty of time to replace it.

How to enrol in the new service

You'll soon be able to submit a self-service request to join the service, but in the meantime, please email with the subject 'Certificate Service Enrolment' and provide the following information:

  • the name of your institution
  • the domain(s) you wish to create certificates for (allow a couple of days if they're not subdomains of, as we'll need to validate them in the new service)
  • whether you want to subdivide your institution into divisions to create certificates (we wouldn't recommend this approach)
  • CRSids of all IT staff who will need to create and manage certificates (if you want to create divisions, please indicate which ones each user belongs to)
  • CRSids of IT staff who will manage users within your institution. They will be able to add and remove users in your institution.

Once we've created your account, you'll be able to create and manage your certificates in the certificate manager at Jisc's certificate manager site.
