We are disabling the public video sharing options in Panopto, the University’s online platform for lecture capture and educational videos, to protect the University from unintended additional costs. No videos will be lost as a result of this change, but you will need to download any videos that you wish to continue to share publicly.
 

Why this change is happening

Lecture capture was launched rapidly at the outset of the pandemic to support teaching and learning. It was never intended to support videos for public consumption. Our Panopto licence is based on an allowance of usage hours, which includes viewings. If we exceed our usage allowance, the University will be subject to considerable additional fees. As public videos are open to worldwide and unlimited viewings, they pose a risk of unpredictable and unlimited cost overages if they are shared from Panopto. Free alternative platforms are available for public video sharing.
 

When this change will happen

The change will happen in two stages:

  • We’ll disable the ‘Anyone with the link’ and ‘Public on the Web’ options for new videos on Wednesday 1 September.
  • We’ll change the settings on all publicly shared videos to ‘Your organisation (unlisted)’ during September. By the end of the month, users will need to log in to Panopto to watch any of these videos.
     

How to share a video publicly

If you wish to share a video publicly, you could use an alternative video streaming platform such as YouTube, which is available via your University Google Workspace for Education account. You can download any of the videos you previously shared publicly on Panopto – see the section on how to ‘Download your Podcast as a creator’ in our Panopto Educational Video Support site on Moodle.
