Students! Beware scam emails allegedly from ‘Student Finance England’ and others

last modified Jan 24, 2019 12:25 PM
At the start of every term – especially at the start of the academic year – scammers ramp up their efforts to target new and existing students. Every year new (and old) students get tricked into giving away their bank details. We're just starting to see this year's phishing campaigns begin in anger, with emails claiming to be from ‘Student Finance England’ (see below), and there will be others…

Apply your common sense!

Please be really vigilant when dealing with such emails. Treat everything with suspicion. Before giving away any personal information adopt all the basic common-sense measures such as:

  • mousing over URLs to see where they really lead
  • not blindly clicking links or opening attachments
  • confirming the sender's identity via other means, e.g. Googling their website to check contact details given are genuine, and contacting them for reassurance.

Stay safe online
