New website accessibility regulations

last modified Apr 30, 2019 10:22 AM
New regulations came into force last year that aim to ensure public sector websites are accessible to all users. UIS has formed a working group to ensure the University's centrally managed digital services comply with these regulations and increase digital inclusivity.

The new regulations – The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 – came into force on 23 September 2018, and aim to ensure public sector websites and mobile apps are accessible to all users – especially those with disabilities. Note that the regulations also cover office file formats, such as Powerpoint and PDFs, that are included in websites.

UIS has formed a working group to ensure that the website content management systems (CMSs) and other affected services that it operates meet the requirements of the legislation, and to create and distribute accessible office file templates. We'll also provide pro forma accessibility statements, which every website will need under the new rules.

Institutions that use a non-centrally managed CMS will need to start thinking about the changes they'll need to make to comply with the regulations. All institutions will need to work with academic staff to ensure that content, including slides and lecture notes, meet the requirements. We'll share our work as we go along, and will provide  guidance and advice on specific points.

Our aspiration is for the University's digital services to be at least best-practice and, where appropriate, sector-leading in the delivery and promotion of digital inclusivity.

We'll provide updates in the monthly UIS bITe-size bulletin. In the meantime, if you have any immediate concerns, please contact , Chair of the UIS Accessibility Working Group.
