Wi-Fi access for students: Windows Phone and Mobile

How to set up eduroam on a mobile device running Windows Phone or Windows Mobile

These instructions are for configuring eduroam for devices running Microsoft Windows Phone 8.1, or Windows Mobile 6.x. Before you begin, make sure you're in a location where the eduroam wireless network is available, have your @cam email address handy and have collected your network access token from the UIS Token page.

The instructions are different depending on which OS you're using:

 

Setting up eduroam on Windows Phone 8.1

On any screen, swipe your finger down from the top of the screen.

In the notification panel, tap 'All settings'.

On the system tab, tap WiFi.

Select eduroam from the list of available networks.

Sign in to the network with your username and password.

  • For the username, enter your full @cam email address, in the format [CRSid]@cam.ac.uk (see example in the screenshot below).
  • For the password, enter the 16-character network access token you collected from the UIS Token page.

Ensure the server certification validation is set to 'always ask me' and the EAP method is 'PEAP MS-CHAP v2' (they should be the defaults), and tap done.

You'll be asked to accept a certificate. Check that the details match those shown below, and then tap accept.

Your device should now automatically connect to the University's Wireless Service via eduroam whenever an access point is in range. If it doesn't work, double check the above steps – particularly making sure your entered the user name and password correctly. If you're still unable to connect, contact the  for help.

 

Setting up eduroam on Windows Mobile 6.x

Select Start, then Settings, then Connections, then Wireless LAN and then Turn on Wireless LAN.

On the Wireless LAN Main tab, select Change network. From the list of available networks, pick eduroam.

You'll be asked to configure the wireless network:

  • check that the Network name is eduroam
  • set Connects to to The Internet.

Then select Next.

On the Configure network authentication page:

  • set Authentication to WPA2
  • set Data Encryption to AES.

The select Next. On the next page:

  • set EAP type to PEAP.

Then select Finish.

Your device will now connect to the eduroam network for the first time. You'll be asked to log in:

  • for the Username, enter your full @cam email address, in the format [CRSid]@cam.ac.uk
  • for the Password, enter the 16-character network access token you collected from the UIS Token page.

After a few moments, your device should report that it is connected to the eduroam service. If it doesn't work, double check the above steps – particularly making sure your entered the user name and password correctly. If you're still unable to connect, contact the  for help.
