IT Help and Support

University Information Services

As part of our review of managed desktop provision, UIS has decided not to continue providing its Citrix-based 'Apps Anywhere' virtual desktop service.
The University’s needs have changed significantly since we purchased Citrix licences 3 years ago. Widespread adoption of laptops and collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive during the pandemic has led to a significant reduction in demand for a virtual desktop service, and usage has dramatically fallen since its launch.
We have therefore decided not to renew the licences for the Apps Anywhere service, which will expire in October. Note that this does not affect Citrix licences purchased for other uses, such as supporting the Secure Research Computing Platform (SRCP).
During July, we will be individually contacting the small number of remaining Apps Anywhere users – predominantly in the Unified Administration Service (UAS) – to support their transition to a suitable alternative before the Citrix licences expire.
If you have any queries, please contact Steve Hoensch, Head of Frontline Services.

We have deprecated the MCS Linux service because of technical and resource constraints. At its peak, MCS Linux accounted for only 2% of MCS machines deployed, and use of this service has declined steadily in recent years.
