Service hours

Normal operating schedule

All services normally run with operations staff present (attended operation), subject to the holidays and vulnerable periods shown below, as follows:

Monday to Friday 08:00–17:00

At other times they run with no operations staff present (unattended operation).

Holidays

UIS is closed on bank holidays. In addition, UIS will close at 17:00 on Tuesday 24 December 2019 for the Christmas/New Year holiday and re-open at 08:30 on Thursday 2 January 2020.

Unattended operation

When a service is running unattended, if it should fail, the service might not be reinstated until the next period of attended operation. In practice, staff monitor services from time to time outside normal working hours and are often able to reinstate them, but this can not be relied upon.

Vulnerable periods

The following periods are designated as vulnerable. During these periods, services may be interrupted for maintenance or other dedicated work.

Desktop Services*, DS-Print Scheduled Downtime, Hermes* , Jackdaw*, Falcon*, Managed Web Service*, Lookup* Monday to Friday 07:30–09:00 [1] 17:00–19:00 [1]
Saturday, Sunday Sat 00:00 to Mon 08:00
CUDN* Monday to Saturday 07:30–09:00 [1] 17:00–19:00 [1], [2]
Sunday 00:00 to Mon 08:00
JANET* Tuesday 07:00–09:00
HR Systems, Student Systems, Moodle, Electromic Document Management System (EDMS), Research Administration Systems Tuesday and Thursday 07:00–09:00
Finance System Tuesday and Thursday 06:00–09:00
High Performance Computing* Tuesday 10:00–18:00

*Announcements about when these services are likely to be disrupted during vulnerable periods are made 24 hours in advance (or, for deferred emergency maintenance, by 15:00 the preceding period) in UIS News (which is syndicated on the UIS Website homepage) and, where possible, on the appropriate systems.

Notes:
08:45–09.00 and 17:00–17:15 are avoided when possible.
17:00–19:00 is not normally used for non-urgent work that might disrupt a significant part of the CUDN.

System changes

We're planning the following maintenance changes to the University's IT systems. Where possible, work is kept within the vulnerable periods advertised above.

This timetable will be updated on Thursdays following the UIS Change Board.

Date service/system impact contact
21 May CUFS APEX - brief outage during the vulnerable period to restart reporting system
23 May APEX Minor database patches - brief outage during the vulnerable period for system restart. This may cause short knock-on outages for some CUFS, CHRIS and CamSIS reports
28 May West Cambridge Data Centre Power testing - datacentre will be running at reduced resilience for a few hours but there should be no interruption to service.

Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7 on 14 January 2020. The good news is that you may be entitled to a free upgrade to Windows 10, if your institution is participating in the University's EES agreement.
