20-Feb-2016 Soulsby data centre - earlier loss of power - update at 17:55

The West Cambridge site suffered an electrical power disruption at approximately 12:30 on Saturday, 20 February 2016. As a result a number of services that are operated from data centres on the site were affected.

As of 17:35 most systems were operational but may be operating with lower levels of redundancy than normal. We are aware of ongoing problems with CHRIS (the HR system) and the Electronic Document Management System (EDMS).

Senior members of staff from UIS are meeting on-site at 10:00 on Sunday, 21 February to assess the situation and we will provide an update following that meeting.

If you experience unexpected behaviour from any of our systems please email the UIS Service Desk.

Further information

As a result of the power loss to the West Cambridge site, some high performance computing equipment lost power earlier. These systems have been brought back online.

The power disruption caused the air cooling systems at the Soulsby data centre to go offline. Power to the room was returned automatically with the backup power facilities; without cooling the equipment in the room caused the temperature to rise to a critical level and the building management system performed an emergency shutdown.

UIS staff have been attending to systems from 13:30. Colleagues from Estates Management have also been in attendance.

The backup power system at the Soulsby data centre has a fault which means that at present all services in the room are running on mains power without appropriate backup facilities. Our colleagues from Estates Management are prioritising the repair of this equipment.

Other institutions that host equipment in the Soulsby centre have been contacted and are looking after their own systems.

Most of our services are now operational but running with reduced levels of resilience.
