Changing your UIS passwords

The UIS Password Management Application lets you change your UIS Password (or individual passwords for Raven, Hermes and Desktop Services), view your change history log, and control who can reset your password for you if you forget it.

Note:

i. The password change for Hermes email accounts may take up to 30 minutes to take effect. Most email programs will stop getting new mail as soon as your new UIS Password becomes active, but in some cases the change may not be noticeable until you close the email program or restart your device.

ii. Raven, MCS etc passwords should only take a minute or two to take effect.

iii. Active Directory password, only in the first instance of change, may need up to 3 hours to take effect.

1. How do I change my UIS Password?

  1. Go to the UIS Password Management page (https://password.csx.cam.ac.uk)
If you are logged in, click the Your page> button.
If you are not logged in, click the Log In> button.
Note: If you can't log in using Raven, follow the procedure for forgotten passwords.

  2. Click the Change password button to advance to the Change your password page.

  3. Enter your current UIS Password (or password for Raven).

  4. Think of a new password, and enter it in the New password field.
We recommend you use your existing Hermes password, if you know it. Otherwise, you must remember to update your email client's account settings to use the new password you will create here.

Using the built-in password generator tool

If you click the Generate a random password link shown below the New password field, you will see a truly random password suggestion. You can copy and paste it into the new password field if you want to use it, or click the Generate another random password link to get another suggestion:

The strength of your new password will be shown as you type. We recommend using a password with a rating of 'Very strong':

Enter your new password again in the Confirm password field.
Make a note of your new password, and keep it in a safe place – away from your computer – until you memorise it.

    Password change confirmation message
Note: If you joined the University before 18th February 2014, changing any one of your individual Raven, Hermes or Desktop Services passwords will upgrade your all accounts to use your new UIS Password for these instead.

    Click the Set password> button.
You will see a confirmation message showing which of your passwords have just been updated:
Note: changes may take up to 30 minutes to take effect across all systems.

If you use an email program to get your Hermes email...

Your email program (e.g. Apple Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird) will still be configured to use your old UIS Password. You must update the account settings in your email program to use your new UIS Password, otherwise you will stop receiving email on your computer or mobile device. You will find instructions for setting-up various popular email programs here:

Email program settings for Hermes

Note: The password change may take up to 30 minutes to take effect. Most email programs will stop getting new mail as soon as your new UIS Password becomes active, but in some cases the change may not be noticeable until you close the email program or restart your device.

2. How do I change my my individual password(s) for Raven, Hermes or Desktop Services?

If you joined the University before 18 February 2014, you may still be using separate passwords for Raven, Hermes and Desktop Services accounts, rather than a combined UIS Password, which works for all three accounts.

If you know your password for your Raven user account, you can use the UIS Password Management Application to change it (see instructions above).

Note: In effect, using the UIS Password management Application will switch you over to using the combined UIS Password, replacing your old Raven, Hermes and Desktop Services passwords. You will not be able to continue to have separate passwords for your Raven, Hermes and Desktop services user accounts.
