Research Data Store

The Research Data Store provides large scale, enterprise grade storage for Cambridge research data associated registered with principal investigators. It is ideal for research groups that wish to store data on a full enterprise storage framework with disaster recovery capabilities to reduce data loss scenarios.

Researchers would most commonly use this service when they have large active data sets they need to access frequently. For example, this could involve data processing on or through the High Performance Computing service. As the Research Data Store provides high capacity storage and has a high bandwidth connection to all of the UIS data analysis platforms, it can perform large-scale analysis and interactive visualisation of stored data sets.

Researchers can be confident in the safety of their data as the Research Data Store platform consists of a disk-based storage system plus a tape system for disaster recovery. The primary disk storage offers enterprise grade servers configured to support high availability, and data is copied asynchronously to libraries in two different locations, one of which is in a different location to the Research Data Store platform. This results in three copies of data, providing assurance beyond what external disk drives or local departmental storage can generally offer.


With no upper limit on the amount of data storage you can purchase and with data replicated on a daily basis, the Research Data Store is optimised for large quantities of unstructured data that is being analysed and worked on. It is available on all of the UIS research computing and data analytics platforms through our high performance data centre network.

If users run out of space at any point during their licence, they can easily add more space, the cost of which will be calculated on a pro-rata basis.
