RDS Access via dedicated SSH Gateways
Directories for data storage on RDS will be named according to the project name submitted as part of the purchase of space on RDS.
The full project name assigned at the purchase of storage is:
rds-<PIs CRSID>-<Project Name>
All data stored under this project will have their group ownership changed to a group named according to the above full project name.
You are able to transfer data into and out of your project space via dedicated gateways and using client applications implementing the SSH protocol which are native to Unix/Linux/MacOSX machines, such as sftp and rsync:
rsync -av -h --progress LOCAL-DATA-DIR <CRSID>@rds.uis.cam.ac.uk:rds-<PIs CRSID>-<Project Name>/
from a UNIX/Linux/MacOSX machine, or from a Windows machine with Cygwin (the username can generally be omitted if your local username is also your CRSID).
Alternatively, free graphical implementing SSH protocol for data transfer can be downloaded from:
To connect using one of the above client applications you will need to enter
username: <your CRSID>
password: <your Raven password>
Examples with detailed instructions on using these SFTP clients will be available on the storage services webpages soon.
RDS Access via the HPC Clusters
If you are an existing user of the HPC clusters hosted in the West Cambridge Data Centre, RDS will already be mounted on these systems and your project space available at:
Also for convenience, each HPC home directory will contain a symbolic link to the RDS user directory, e.g.
~/rds -> /rds/user/<CRSID>
Data can be transferred in or out of the service in the same ways as you would normally transfer data into or out of the HPC clusters.
For more details on how to access UIS HPC services please visit:
Firstly, please ensure that any self-administered machines (e.g. workstations, laptops or servers) which you use to connect to UIS services are fully up to date with respect to operating system updates, antivirus and antispyware software. For more information (including links to free antivirus software) please visit:
On connecting for the first time via SSH gateway you will be asked to accept the RDS service public key. The correct fingerprint of this key will be reported as one of the following values:
If you see a different fingerprint at this stage, please CANCEL and contact firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as possible.
The RDS uses the UIS Password in common with other central UIS services such as Raven, Hermes and Desktop Services, visit:
for more information.
If the UIS Password does not appear to work, please visit the UIS Password Management page at
and perform a password change - this will propagate your UIS Password to the HPCS (it is permissible to change the password to itself provided the strength indicator shows GREEN).
Any planned maintenance will be advertised in advance. Every reasonable effort will be made to maintain uninterrupted service otherwise.
Your project data storage directory on RDS will have UNIX permissions set such that only you and the other nominated members of your group will be able to access it.
The RDS support team will use email to advise the user base of impending events such as planned maintenance periods, or emergencies affecting service. This is done using the University list server and by default all users are added to the list email@example.com. This is a moderated list and although you may opt out of this if you wish, we would prefer you did not.
