FAQ: I want to use one of the online databases linked from Endnote and it asks me for a password. How do I get in?

FAQ V26

Many of the connection files which are included with the EndNote program link to subscription-only databases based in the United States. However the University Library hosts local copies of many of them. You will generally need your Raven password to access them off-campus, but most machines within the cam domain can connect to them freely.

To view a complete list of electronic databases available from the UL go to http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/electronicresources/

Most of the databases require you to download your references using a web browser and them import into EndNote using a filter. Some will allow you to download in a form which will automatically open with EndNote.

If you are importing references containing non-Roman characters from an online source it is important to set EndNote's "text translation" option to match the encoding of the original source (e.g. a UTF-8 source must be imported with Text Translation set as Unicode (UTF-8).

If you are working on a University site with a laptop connection via wireless the eduroam service will allow you to make EndNote connections, but the browser-based Wi-Fi service may not. This is because EndNote is treated as an insecure service if it is connected via ordinary Wi-Fi.

University Information Services runs a course on basic use of EndNote each term (see Endnote for Bibliographies courses). If you need further help, or if you can't attend the course and would like a copy of the course workbook, email
