Why don't my Hermes secure settings in Outlook/Thunderbird work?

The email documentation makes reference to secure settings. Unfortunately there are settings in Outlook/Outlook Express and Thunderbird which also use the term secure but which are unnecessary and indeed will not work with Hermes. You need to make sure that you have not ticked one of these inadvertently. To check these:

Outlook

  1. Choose the Tools menu, select Email Accounts
  2. Under E-mail, choose View or change existing e-mail accounts, choose Next
  3. Choose the name of your email account and choose Change
  4. Make sure that Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is not ticked
  5. Close Outlook and then restart the application, this should hopefully resolve the problem

Thunderbird

  1. Choose the Tools menu, select Account Settings
  2. Under your account name choose Server Settings and make sure that Use secure authentication is not ticked
  3. Close Thunderbird and then restart the application, this should hopefully resolve the problem
